Unreal, 2.7.1 is out today and I have to admit to personally being a bit too excited!
Of particular interest to y’all are probably going to be the first two major items:
- A revamped plugin system thanks to Andy Peatling. Plugins installed in the plugins directory rather than mu-plugins can be activated and deactivated on all blogs with one click.
- The admin bar was removed. It’ll be stuffed into a plugin instead.
It’s great to see plugin commander-esque functionality getting into the core (and well worth the wait :) and also I reckon it was the right call to remove the admin bar (for the moment) as we were running into some issues with it to – so that’s a nice timesaver.
Congrats as always to Donncha too… just in time for a slice of cake :)

I might be missing something, but from what I’ve seen, plugins can be now be activated sitewide, but the “Plugin Commander” functionality is still missing….meaning, you cannot prevent users from seeing specific plugins …. if plugins are in the root install, users still see all of them…. which is a problem for a number of reasons…. some are useless to end users, some are not safe to give users access to, etc….
Would love to use Plugin Commander but am thinking that it can’t be used with Supporter plugin ( I think that’s the one, one of the Premium plugins we put in prevents using P Commander…. if it’s not supporter.. ) … probably hiring someone this week to write a plugin to fix this….
Wondering how other Supporter users deal with this…
Thanks for the announcement but I will wait a little bit till most plugIns are totally compatible with it. I have one time “burned my fingers” by adopting too early and so I am more carful now.
