A number of exciting updates were released in the BuddyPress world over the holidays. We’ve been keeping our finger on the pulse of WordPress all the while and we won’t let you miss a beat.
A few days before the new year Andy Peatling announced that the BuddyPress trunk now offers WordPress single user support. This opens up a lot of opportunities for those in the WordPress community who want to experiment with BuddyPress but would rather not have to deal with WPMU. It’s also great for those sites that don’t require blog functionality for their BuddyPress users. Many of those who have tried it are reporting that it’s already quite stable.
Being the curious type, I had to try it for myself. So far it seems to be working fairly decently. If you want to install version 1.2-rare, here’s what you do:
1. Install WP Single User.
2. Make sure Pretty Permalinks are turned on.
3. Download the BuddyPress Trunk here.
Scroll down to the bottom and grab the zip archive.
4. Unpack it and upload to your wp-plugins directory.
5. Make sure you move the bp-themes folder to the wp-content/themes directory and you should be good to go.
This exciting news puts BuddyPress one step closer to being ready for the WPMU merge with single user WordPress in 3.0. If you’ve been daunted by getting into WPMU but are dying to try BuddyPress, go ahead and test it out on single user WordPress. One thing – you don’t need to move the theme folder any more. The theme’s will automatically show up under the “Appearance” tab in WordPress 2.9.

It worked so perfect with wp 2.9.1 RC1 with latest trunk of BP. I do not see any reasons why we need multi blogs which we can allow our users to become a contributor to post in a single blog also their own updates like twitter style.
Looking forward to see much more behind WP/BP soon!

@Dave – Forums component is set up by going to the ‘BuddyPress’ section of the wp-admin backend, and selecting ‘Forum Setup.’ It should be a two click install for most people.

Great news. It seems that someone already succeed to use RPX in conjunction with BuddyPress. This is even better for user engagement.

I download the zip archive 2264, unzip the trunk, renamed the trunk dir into buddypress dir and then upload the buddypress dir to wp-content/plugins Nothing is visible in the plugin administration panel of my WordPress 2.9.1 installation.

I was actually telling my partner about BuddyPress the other day, that it could be a viable alternative to things like JomSocial or Dolphin, but he wasn’t to hot on it because it was WPMU only.

Yay ! Works perfectly for me (using the latest 2.9.1), although a copy of bbpress was missing in the trunk archive but that’s just a details.
…”almost” have a community working with WPMU-BuddyPress. Not sure whether to switch and try to launch with Single WP. Is this the realm of major hard-core programmers, not the realm of “web coordinators” such as myself?
We’ve tested this and found more than a few issues. The forum integration with groups needs lots of work. Errors upon attempting to post new topics. Create group link missing from the menu. Once the bugs are worked out this will open new horizons for WordPress users and developers. For now, we’ll just have to wait for a more stable release.
I have a 404 error when I click on the public site on My account items… maybe somethig wrong with the permalink ?

For permalinks we used custom structure of /%postname%/
Im getting this error:

Try renaming the /plugins/trunk to /plugins/buddypress

Hi! I am also testing byddypress on WP – version 2.9.1
and encounterd the same problem as MateMedia – can not create new group! I am using default theme, and no other problems experienced so far. But I did not try to use forums at all.
I didn’t find this article until after I downloaded and installed the latest release of buddypress on their site. I don’t have the trunk version and everything seems to be working fine. Will I run into issues later? What’s the difference between the trunk and the latest release?
You should be fine now. This article was written several months ago when it was only in the trunk.
It said I could not upload the plugin due to fatal error. :(
