Moving a BuddyPress profile field to a new field group might seem fairly obvious to you if you’ve been using BuddyPress for awhile. It actually is fairly intuitive, but the beginner might benefit from a few basic instructions.
Profile fields can be moved via drag and drop. Simply hover over the field you want to move and then drag it over the tab for the field group where you want to place it.
Do you have a problem with spambot registrations or have custom fields added to your BuddyPress Registration page? Maybe users are getting to the /wp-login.php?action=register page instead of your /register/ page? Here’s a snippet I came up with to redirect the first to the second.

I’m a huge fan of the new WordPress toolbar integration for the BuddyPress user menu. However, if you’ve heavily customized the BuddyBar and you’re not quite ready to switch over to the new WordPress toolbar, you can still upgrade.
Here’s a quick snippet you can use to make sure your BuddyPress site continues to use the BuddyBar:

BuddyPress 1.6 has finally dropped! We’ve all been waiting on the edge of our seats and this makes for a happy Monday.

Many of us are sitting on the edge of our seats in anticipation of the official BuddyPress 1.6 release. This weekend the BuddyPress development team released BuddyPress 1.6 RC2. We’re now closer than ever to the 1.6 release and can expect it very soon. If you want to be ready ahead of time, go ahead and download RC2 from WordPress.org and make sure your theme and plugins will be compatible.
BuddyPress 1.5.7 was also released this weekend. It’s a security release that addresses an important bug. If you’re using BuddyPress 1.5+, you can upgrade to BuddyPress 1.5.7 immediately without any problem.
The WordPress-Buddypress-Lockdown challenge
I often read about folks wanting to lockdown their WordPress-Buddypress site, and make it so that content is accessible to logged-in members only. Even more, many want to know how to redirect site visitors to a landing page like Facebook – with login and registration on the page – while still having some select content available to them.
Look no further folks. Today, we’re gonna git ‘er done!
Once we’re finished with this project, and depending on your chosen theme of course, your landing page should look quite similar to the screenshot at right.

We weren’t sure exactly when it would be released, but now we are closer than ever with RC1 out the door today. Time to fire up your BuddyPress development environments and start testing! A professional networking site has different requirements than your standard personal social networking site. The style of interaction is entirely different. Social networking sites that focus on sharing one’s personal life tend to be based on more casual relationships between people and usually include a less formal approach to the presentation of one’s profile and activity. Professional networking sites, however, often have similar features to non-professional networking sites but the user’s approach is entirely different and sharing is much more intentional. As a result, professional networking sites often have a greater struggle with getting users to share and interact with each other’s content.
