State of the Word 2012 – Where WordPress Has Been and Where It’s Going

Every year now for the past six years, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg has given a “State of the Word” address – i.e. a report on what’s happened with WordPress in the last year and a look forward to the year ahead.

This year’s State of the Word took place at the San Francisco WordCamp a few days ago.

We have embedded a video of the talk below; however, because it’s long (nearly 48 minutes), we’ve also pulled out some of the major points and put them into text (along with an approximate matching time point in the video).

New WordPress Notifications: Does Facebook Have Something to Fear?

So WordPress just released a new feature which will dispatch notifications to users anytime their username is mentioned in the “WordPress Ecosystem.” According to WordPress.org, the hope is that this will allow for more timely and active discussions. Another benefit will be better customer service for WordPress plugin users, since developers will now be able to respond to complains, questions and concerns in a timelier manner.

Gravatar.com recently announced that they are now “Retina-ready,” delivering avatar images up to 2048px.
Retina, in this case, refers to the high-density display found on Apple products such as the company’s latest iPad as well as the Retina MacBook Pro.

Displaying Retina-ready images on your WordPress site is getting easier all the time. And now with Gravatar’s attention to Retina, your site’s avatars (gravatars) can shine through in high-def too.

The WordPress core development team is already busily preparing for the upcoming WordPress 3.5 release. The media library is due for some major changes. Daryl Koopersmith posted some slides for discussion on the make.wordpress.org blog. Here’s a sneak peak of the wireframes and workflows they’ve got in motion. Customize WordPress (or Any CMS) With the New Tweaky Service

Earlier this year I interviewed Ned Dwyer on his upcoming ThemePivot WordPress customization service. It has now been relaunched as Tweaky, a marketplace for all kinds of website customization in the form of “Tweaks”, which are minor customizations to a website. While Tweaky is currently primarily WordPress-focused, the service has broadened its offering to any CMS. Tweaks start at just $25.

How does it work?

Digg Loses Nearly $200 Million, 5 Lessons for WordPress Bloggers

In many ways, Digg was the pioneer of Social Bookmarking. People were linking to articles and “digging” articles before they were liking and sharing them on Facebook or sending out mass Tweets on Twitter. When Digg was started in 2004, its founder Kevin Rose raised nearly $50 million from venture capital firms and at one time Google was going to buy Digg for $200 million.

WP Engine Offers Customers Git-Based Version Control and Deployment

Austin-based WP Engine is one of the leaders in WordPress hosting, and it isn’t any wonder, given their dedication to high quality service and innovative tools for developers. They currently provide hosting services for 4,000 customers and serve 45,918 domains. This week the team at WP Engine is releasing Git-push-to-deploy for their customers.

Version control is a grossly neglected practice in the WordPress community, and WP Engine is hoping to change that by bringing their git-based solution mainstream as part of their hosting services.

Why do we need Version Control?
