I ran into this issue the other day. After upgrading BuddyPress files, I received this notice when trying to activate BuddyPress again: “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error” Sounds scary, doesn’t it? I’m not entirely sure what’s causing it. Maybe it’s running into the memory limit? At any rate, after searching the forums, I found this hack that fixed it for me:
1. Create a new file, e.g. bp-loader-fix.php
2. Move the contents of bp-loader.php over except the first comment block
3. Make sure the new file has starting and ending tags, same with bp-loader.php
4. In bp-loader.php, add the following as the last (and now only) php statement
require_once('bp-loader-fix.php');

Daily Tip: Getting a Blank Fatal Error When Activating BuddyPress? Try This Quick Hack
On our site I encountered this error and discovered that changing the order in which the following 3 plugin were activated would either trigger the error or avoid it.
This activation sequence seemed to avoid the error.
1) BuddyPress
2) BuddyPress Calendar
3) BuddyPress Email
For whatever its worth,
Phil D
Sarah,
I get the “The plugin does not have a valid header.”
Amit – That’s a totally different error, so this hack probably wouldn’t work for you. Maybe try the BuddyPress forums?
Sorry, I should have been more specific. Actually, I get the error after following the steps for the hack.
I’m able to install the BP plugin with the hack but unable to activate it.
this doesn’t work for me.
I did the hack still get fatal error.
I had it up and running earlier then messed it all up, dropped my database and wiped the web server, reinstalled word press and buddy press get fatal error when trying to activate buddypress.
Please help. I know this is an old thread but I need help.
