May 10, 2010 Make Sure to Upload the Favicon to Both the Theme Directory and The Root of Your Website
This little tip is courtesy of your friend, the WordPress codex:
1. With an FTP Client, upload the new favicon.ico file into your current theme’s main folder.
2. Upload another copy of your favicon.ico file to the main directory of your site (ie. http://example.com/favicon.ico). This will display the favicon in your subscribers’ feedreaders.

What is the best way to create a quick favicon?
Usually you can just use an online generator to make your square image into a .ico file … something like this: http://www.favicon.cc/

I’ve read somewhere that the browsers will identify the favicon olny in the root directory.
i.e : site.com/favicon.ico
Does this need to be ico or can i have any other format of favicon. coz I wanted a gif?
