Ever visit a site and wonder what WordPress theme it is using? Of course you can sniff around in the source code or view the theme’s main stylesheet, but not everyone knows how to do that. What WordPress Theme is That is a site that lets you simply enter the URL and it will tell you the information you want to know. It pulls the information from the active theme’s stylesheet:

If you’re not sure if a site is even using WordPress, the quickest way to know is to grab an add-on for your browser that will tell you what CMS a site is running on. Chrome Sniffer is very useful for Chrome users to easily detect web applications and Javascript libraries that are running on the site you’re browsing. Wappalyzer is a similar add-on for Firefox. If you discover a website is using WordPress and want to find out more about its theme, just put the URL in at What WordPress Theme is That and you’ll be able to find a quick summary of the available information.

Personally I like the Theme Sniffer Chrome extension. Pretty nifty little add-on.

Nice one! I didn’t know about that – will have to do a little writeup of it in the future. Thanks!
No problem. And since you’re on the topic of seeing what theme a site is built on, another handy extension is BuiltWith for seeing the technology behind a site. Just thought I’d throw it out there in case you hadn’t heard of that one either.

That’s pretty cool and I had no idea that my site was used in example :)

Wayne, I tried that Chrome extension, but it doesn’t do much. All it gives you is a name and a link to do a Google search.
I tried it on a couple of sites and it got the theme name completely wrong on one of them.
Or you could just “view source” and find “/themes/*/style.css” – that’s the theme.
Yes of course, as already noted in the article above. ;) But some people don’t know how to do that so they may find this site easier to use.
Sarah… you’re kidding. I suspect anyone with the curiosity to find the theme would know about “viewing source”. These tools are handy, but it only takes 30 seconds to check the source
No, not kidding at all. There are some non-tech people out there who don’t know how to view the source. It’s a wild world we live in! ;)
I like this quite good tip Indeed i am wondering which theme is your.
:)
The Problem here is,what if the Website Publisher has Changed the nameof the theme to his Website name ?
We can never know the original name of WordPress theme.Any Solution?
Technically, if it’s had it’s name changed it’s a “custom” theme, but chances are good there are details within the style.css file that will help you track down the original theme. Search the source for style.css, open that file and read the header – and also look for any includes that might indicate it’s a child theme.
I saw a website recently, and figured It was a custom one off layout… I then saw the same layout on a second theme cooliris.com — and I am having trouble dissecting the original source of the common layout. have you seen this layout before and can you tell if there is a wordpress equivalent? than you in advance for your assistance :/
