Configuring WPMU to run BuddyPress on multiple blogs is easier than you might think. This is a tip directly from the BuddyPress guide to changing internal configuration settings:
Allow BuddyPress to function on multiple blogs of a WPMU installation, not just on one root blog:

|
define ( 'BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG', true );

Add that bit to your wp-config.php file and you’re good to go!

It is flawed reasoning to say multiple instances of Buddypress . It does not do anything other than not breaking the links on multiple blogs.
So when you define the above line in your wp-config.php/bp-custom.php, the Buddypress pages can be shown on any blog, but again, they all share a single instance of Buddypress.I.e The user base, the directory, group all are shared and same across all blogs.
Please do not confuse multiple instance of buddypress with BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG. Currently, there is no way to run multiple instance of Buddypress on WordPress Mu, until and unless you can do some heavy database tweaking.
So, Brajesh, here we are 19 months later, when will someone do the “heavy database tweaking” to make this “so often asked for feature” a reality? Never? Then Buddypress is not multisite compatible and for someone wanting to set up multiple sites on the same domain with a single install of WordPress+BuddyPress, it is not possible.
Understood. I will rephrase it so it’s more accurate. Thanks Brajesh!
Thanks for this post!
I was at a loss as to why those links were broken when using a buddypress template on other blogs.
True what Brajesh says though, I was hoping (perhaps a little too optimistically) that this would then allow things like separate ‘groups’ to exist under each blog, but from the research I’ve done so far this is not an out of the box possibility…
I want this too. We’re not alone. When will it happen?
