Daily Tip: What to Do if a Plugin Kills Your WordPress Site

Here’s a quick emergency tip for those rare times when you install a new WordPress plugin or upgrade an existing plugin and it breaks your site: Rename the plugin folder.

Most of the time if a plugin has broken your site, you won’t be able to get into the admin area to deactivate it. The simplest and easiest way to get your site back online is to rename the offending plugin’s folder. For example, if the plugin that broke your site is called “MyEvents”, you can rename it to “MyEvents-2″. Then you can decide if you want to delete the plugin, use an older version, or find a way to fix it.

  2. I have had this several times in the past, and the first reaction is as always the speeding up of the heart as I go into panic mode, wondering what I did or what else went wrong.

    These things usually happen at an awkward moment, when you are busy with other commitments, or need to have the site running.

    Having calmed down, it’s a case of renaming the folder in FTP, and figuring out one by one which plugins caused the problem. Usually it’s fairly obvious, especially once you get used to the routine.
