Have you ever had a site overrun by spam, even when you’ve turned comments completely off? Maybe it’s a site you don’t visit often or an old site you want to get back to. Or maybe it’s a client’s site that doesn’t get much attention on the back end.
In some cases you may have hundreds or even thousands of spam comments to delete.
If you’ve ever experienced this, then the Delete Pending Comments plugin is for you.
How It Works
After activating the plugin, just click “Delete Pending Comments” under the Comments section in your Admin area.
Once on the plugin’s page, you will see a very simple form.
Simply copy the sentence, “I am sure I want to delete all pending comments and realize this can’t be undone,” paste it into the box, and then hit Delete Pending Comments.
Voila! All spam comments are gone, even if you have thousands of them.

I wish there was a plugin that did this but filtered for none spam comments! Hmmm guess that’d be magic though.. hah!
Ha! Yeah, magic. … But in any case, if you turn comments off, for example, and you’re still getting comments, you can be pretty certain that they’re all spam.
If you have a site where you have comments enabled, then hopefully you’re keeping up with it fairly regularly, and the spam that comes in is more manageable.
How a person can comment after turning it off?

It doesn’t stop comments from coming in. It just deletes all pending comments at once. So if you’re sure all your pending comments are spam, then you can get rid of them all very quickly.
Some themes have an embedded comment form and don’t check the settings, so the comment form still works.
I could have done with this on a blog a few months ago but will keep a note of it. As it doesn’t future-proof against more spam though it would be worth installing a plugin like GASP (Growmap antispam) to ensure no more automated spam comments can be made or the problem will just return.
Imho GASP seems to be 100% effective against spambots though you still need Akismet etc (or use this plugin) to combat any human spam.
