Well, there sure are a lot of people out there who want to disable the WP 3.1 admin bar!
We’ve had a whole suite of visitors to WPMU.org since launch looking for exactly that, so I igured I’d share again how you do it, taken from our daily tip, how to disable the WordPress 3.1 admin bar back in November last year.
- Probably the easiest route is to use Ozh’s excellent plugin to turn the bar off
- Alternatively you could just add this filter to your themes functions.php
- Or you can follow Yoasts various tricks for displaying it on a per user basis
Or… you can always visit your Profile (just click on your username in the top right) and turn it off there for yourself (thanks Rob).

There ya go :)

Alternatively you can just disable either menu by going into your user settings?
Took me 5 minutes to figure this out.
Under your user profile:
Show Admin Bar
Show Admin Barwhen viewing site
in dashboard
Two tick boxes. Saves cluttering up your install with unnecessary hacks or plug-ins.

I actually have the opposite problem: I can’t get the admin bar to display on my site! The 28px margin is added to the top of the page when I am logged in, but nothing is displayed there — it’s just blank space. Any ideas? I think it has to be a problem with my theme, but don’t know where to start looking…
Daniel, i have the same problem. Its blank with 28px height… did you figure it out the problem?
thks
@Ivo
Indeed, it was a problem with our theme: needed to add
to our footer.php file, right before the closing body tag.That was supposed to say “php wp_footer();” but it got stripped from my comment…

@Nicky Smart
Yes, as I mentioned in my previous comment, the solution was to add wp_footer(); before the closing body tag in your footer.php.
Sarah also included the solution in her blog post at http://wpmu.org/how-to-avoid-common-pitfalls-and-ensure-a-smooth-wordpress-3-1-upgrade/
