Introducing WP Stripe: A PayPal Alternative for WordPress

Introducing WP Stripe: A PayPal Alternative for WordPress

So what’s all the buzz about Stripe? If you haven’t heard, Stripe is the new kid on the block when it comes to online payment processing. Stripe was created by developers and entrepreneurs who are dedicated to building a simple payment solution for developers, knowing the challenges of online payments firsthand.

Noel Tock has just released a WordPress plugin that will make it easy for you to use Stripe on your site for processing payments. WP Stripe gets you hooked up by handling the credit cards so that they go to Stripe’s secure environment and never hit your servers.

Tired of PayPal? WP Stripe is a New Way to Pay

PayPal’s fees and general inconvenience make it a frustration for small businesses. WP Stripe is different in that it charges 2.9% + 30 cents per successful charge, so you only get charged when you make money. There are no setup fees, no monthly fees, no validation fees, no card storage fees, and no hidden costs. Earnings are transferred to your bank account on a 7 day rolling basis.

Advantages of Using Stripe to Process Payments:

  • No monthly or setup fees
  • No charge for failed payments
  • You don’t need a merchant account or gateway
  • American Express is charged at the same rate as any other cards
  • No surcharge for business or international cards
  • Build your own payment forms while still avoiding most PCI requirements

Unfortunately, right now you can only receive payments using Stripe if you are in the US. However, the payee or cardholder can be anywhere in the world.

WP Stripe is not just a basic, bare bones plugin. It already includes a solid array of features:

  • Add a Payment Form via Shortcode or Template insert
  • Add a Widget showing Recent Donations/Payments (using Gravatars)
  • View latest Donations/Payments in a Widget (donors can opt-in/opt-out).
  • View latest Donations/Payments in a WP-Admin (makes use of custom post types to store transactions without sensitive data, see FAQ for more information).

Please note that this is not intended to be used as a shopping cart / e-commerce solution, but rather to handle single payments and donations. Here’s an example payment form:

The plugin also comes with a handy Test API for using it to test transactions before deploying your payment forms live.

The developer will soon be adding more features to the plugin, including Project Donations (i.e. with limits & progress bars) and Recurring Payments.

Many thanks to Noel Tock for creating this plugin so that WordPress sites can start taking advantage of the new Stripe payments solution.
