It’s generally been our policy to avoid upgrades (just apply patches) until we hit .1 of a WPMU release.
For example, seasoned veterans would remember that 2.5.1 or 2.6.1 (or 2) were serious improvements on their .0 counterparts – and when you’ve got tens of thousands of feisty bloggers on your doorstep, you wanna give them the best that you can!
However… 2.7.0, despite frequent trac updates, seems to have got bogged down in the mud and despite WP 2.7.1 being a couple of months old, there’s still no sign of our much beloved WPMU counterpart :(
Could it be that the decision to build in a new plugin commander-esque feature to accommodate BuddyPress has pushed WPMU into a BP style quagmire (2 years and still no 1.0) or has our much anticipated .1 been delayed in favor of a .8.
Who’s to know? Can anyone shed any light on the likelihood or timeline of 2.7.1? Are we the only people who really care (or is the rest of the world like this too)?

According to the forum thread you linked to, BP’s “quagmire” has been 1 year, not 2.
It seems unfair of you to pick on BP, given that Andy has had 1.0 ready for quite a while, he’s just waiting for MU 2.7.1 like the rest of us.
I totally wasn’t picking on it – just observing that the 1.0 for that has been delayed lots and it’s been ages since it was first released. Maybe 1.75 years – I dunno – also there was an ‘official’ announcement that they were doing something…. so no stress, nobody’s picking on anyone ;)
It has been BuddyPress for a year and a half. I’m not sure of it’s previous history as ChickSpeak.
The only reason I mention this is that, clearly, WPMU is massively delayed and the last thing we need is all the hardcore MU crowd getting upset with BuddyPress.
Memes spread quickly and I felt it was important to shoot down the idea that BP is slow-moving. It is one of the fastest moving projects I’ve ever seen.
Just saying ;)
I already asked Donncha and posted about it, but essentially there are a number of open trac tickets that need feedback and testing.
Use the 2.7 branch, not the trunk.
The sooner that happens, the sooner it’ll roll out.
