Hi, you forgot one important purpose of creating a WPMU community.

To accomplish a purpose that serves other people.

That's the only reason I'm working on one, and the only reason I'll need to find a way to make money from it is to ensure that it is supported as it grows to serve as many as possible.

I think a good revenue stream would be (if you have enough users with blogs) to offer to sell your users creations, be they ebooks, logo designs or custom themes on the network and take a piece of the payment. The advantage to the ebook author or theme creator is that they can have their product advertised all over the MU network.

offering the referrer a piece of the money too will take care of the advertising. imagine having 5000 blogs on your network and every one of them able to make a bit of money from advertising someone elses product. the author gets more exposure than they would get on their own, the users get to earn money when he does. and you as the MU owner get a piece too.

of course, the products have to be worth paying for or it'll be just another clickbank sham!

great post (and part 1 was great too), it got me thinking of all sorts of things to put into my new site!!

long story short, release the code, plugins are not worth $50 bucks a month, most wpmu website are not your direct competitiors, you are a niche, or at least lower the payment, its not worth paying $50 dollars for an update of 1 single plugin that u need. matt is right.

@jacek "i think you are sitting in a box if you think you cant make money with WPMU and your definition on making money with a tangible product or a service is also wrong."

I think you missed the point. My point was that you can make money with WPMU. Could you elaborate on how my definition is wrong?

@andrea_r Funny you should say that because I actually consider you one of the generous ones :) I see your name all over the forums helping out anyone that needs it. Although, I do have to ask, what you do for a living? You are running a wpmu with out of pocket expenses... There must be some revenue model you live on? Maybe for #3 under why will you fail, I should have said your platform will always be second best, because your service is what separates you from the rest. Is that where you see a contradiction?

@john Well I think you should charge as much as your service is worth... What are people willing to pay to blog on your platform? I think you also have to take in to account how much they would have to pay if they wanted to do it on their own. What is base rate for hosting these days? $8 a month? Then what else do you have to offer?

Love, love, love these post. I'm wondering thoughts and formulas on setting price points.

Wordpress.com charges roughly 5.40 per month for a basic upgrade... no-ads, 5GB space, custom css, and about 7.50 per month to add a domain and mapping.

Edublogs, charges $6.95 per month for no ads, 5GB, plugins... and as low as 3.30 per month for a year subscription.

Then I've seen people charge as much as $20 per month as stated above.

My question is where is the sweet spot? What kind formula is used to figure this number out. Is it trail and error?

Actually, I do have a WPMU site that is not monetized and I run out-of-pocket for the good of that particular community.

I also keep it rather small though. :)

While I think overall you have some good points, it's a but rushed and you've also contradicted yourself. :) See: #3 under "why?" and #3 under "why will you fail?".
