Mind Your Ps and Qs – Just Say No to WordPress

No, I’m not advising you to say no to the blogging software WordPress. I’m talking about the spelling of WordPress.

The official spelling of WordPress is just how I’ve spelled it here. You’ll notice the capital “P” in the middle of the word for “Press.”

It seems that the WordPress software will automatically “correct” you if you try to spell it with a lower case p. Some people don’t like this. They don’t like the software telling them what they can and can’t write.

When this correction first came about with the release of WordPress 3.0, it caused something of little firestorm. There were a number of reasons for people’s dislike. Some said it could even possibly break URLs on some sites. Another reason was that it was added to the core code by WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg without any discussion. So while Matt was obviously minding his Ps, it seems he wasn’t minding his Qs quite as well.

Regardless of all that, the function still exists. And so if you’d like to mind your own Ps as well as your Qs (WordPress has no problem with Qs, by the way), then one of the methods below will help you reverse this function so that you can write “WordPress” however you like.

Plugin

The Remove WordPress to WordPress filter plugin will do the trick for you. Simply upload it, activate it, and you’re set.

 

Functions File

Another option is to put the following code into your functions.php file in your theme. (Appearance > Edit > Theme Functions – functions.php)

remove_filter( 'the_title', 'capital_P_dangit', 11 );
remove_filter( 'the_content', 'capital_P_dangit', 11 );
remove_filter( 'comment_text', 'capital_P_dangit', 31 );

On a side note, there is debate over the origin of the phrase, “Mind your Ps and Qs” (which means “mind your manners”).  You can read about it at Wikipedia if you’re interested.
