I decided to use gravatars in the themes and plugins of my WPMU site, http://missionsplace.com rather than using buddypress or something like that because of the added benefits of avatars showing up on other blogs across the internet. To encourage my users and bloggers to setup their own gravatars, I created this plugin that shows a preview of their current gravatar, and instructions and links on how to set up or modify it on gravatar.com on the profile admin page. Hopefully this will push more users to create a gravatar.
