Lean Domain Search
Automattic has pulled out its chequebook to buy Lean Domain Search and hire its founder, Matt Mazur.

Mazur will also join the WordPress.com parent company, working full-time on “making it even easier for WordPress.com users to find and register great domain names for their websites and blogs.”

The site, which allows users to find available domain names based on a keyword, was launched on Hacker News in January last year.

Mazur says Lean Domain Search will continue to run since the acquisition will be even be “completely free”.

Lean Domain Search results

Searching for “WPMU” brings up a ton of results – 4971 results, in fact. It will definitely be a helpful tool for new WordPress users who are stuck trying to come up with a domain name for a blog or website.

WordPress.com offers custom domains as part of its upgrades services, allowing users to register a .com, .net, .org or .me address for $13. Lean Domain Search’s addition to Automattic stable of services will likely add a helpful dimension to this upgrade, allowing users to easily search for a domain names they wouldn’t otherwise come up with.

The acquisition comes a month after Automattic bought out WordPress blog editor Poster.
