Update: As promised, here’s the Ning to BuddyPress migration plugin.
As you may well have read earlier today Ning decided to cut free creation of accounts as well as seriously downsizing their workforce!
Well, we’ve been tossing round a Ning migration plugin for BuddyPress for some time, and we reckon that now is as good a time as any to create one.
So, we’re dropping one of our major projects for WPMU DEV (eCommerce) for the moment to build the best plugin we possibly can to help you migrate your Ning site over to BuddyPress.
To be updated as soon as we release it make sure you subscribe to our feed or whack your email in the box on the right to get great BuddyPress / WPMU / WordPress links.
Any particular feature requests / thoughts / ideas please let us know!

Sometimes I think you guys are reading my diary ;) This is the most amazing news. I have 2 ning networks that I plan to move to buddypress and have been waiting just for that.
Thanks,
we are working on a plugin as well at the european mindz.com network…
Stay tuned, cos we’re aiming to produce something special :)
As cool as Mindz looks – I’m thinking that people are going to be keener on hosting their won rather than going with another host though, dontcha think?
Hey, James
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any help with this one.
BTW, creating a bunch of plugins for migrations from other social networks will be a good shot!
@Mike, hopefully we can draw on the collective experience in WPMU DEV and you;d definitely be a big part of that :)
Great initiative! I still have to think about if i will move my 800 members to bp. But if there will be good functional offer to do this – I will definetely take it into consideration.
Good Luck!
Exactly what do you consider is the easiest weblog software to make use of for someone which has a quite restricted practical knowledge of technology?
