A busy site depending solely on automatic updates could eventually lead to unnecessarily extended downtime for them. That would be much worse for a busy site. Our university provides hosts, but no ssh, no ftp and no sftp. We have to use WebDAV for file transfers, but in practice WP is built around ftp for automated upgrades.
