Last December WordPress dramatically stepped up the way media was handled. It improved the Media Library, the Media Manager, and even default WordPress photo galleries. (Check out that link if you want a tutorial on creating galleries.)

Those efforts at the end of last year really made working with galleries much easier and more pleasurable. And so if you’ve been enjoying the new galleries as I have, you may like this little trick that will allow you to put galleries pretty much anywhere you like in your site.

The biggest change in the recently released 3.5 version of WordPress was undoubtedly the way media is handled. Not only did the Media Library change, but the way galleries are created also changed – all for the better.

Below we’ll go over how to insert a photo gallery in a WordPress post. We’ve got both a video tutorial as well as text and images.

Display WordPress Categories in a Fancy Grid Style Gallery

After you’ve seen enough WordPress blogs, you might start to think that they all look alike with similar displays of posts, categories, and archives.

Want to do something a little more creative with your content? Check out the Category Grid View Gallery plugin. It offers you a visual way to display categories on your WordPress site. The plugin generates a grid view of the categories by grabbing the first images from posts within those categories.

Display Your Instagram Photos as a Gallery with WordPress

Instagram fans will love the new Instagram Gallery Widget for WordPress. It gives you the ability to display your Instagr.am pictures in a simple and elegant gallery, as pictured here.

There are a few other Instagram plugins out there already, but the Instagram Gallery Widget has far more features than most of the others. The only other comparable plugin would be InstaPress.

New Plugin Fixes TwentyTen Gallery Style Issues

If you’ve ever used the default WordPress TwentyTen theme, then you know the gallery style ends up being a little screwy when you have multiple columns. A new plugin called TwentyTen Gallery Fix adds some custom classes to galleries and some CSS that fixes the width problem. Below are a couple of screenshots of the default gallery style vs. the new style with the TwentyTen Gallery Fix:
