WordPress To Change ‘Posts’ to ‘Blog’ in Next Version?

We’ve preached about the need to simplify the WordPress dashboard before, and just a few minutes ago one such change was proposed in the WordPress Trac.

This change is simple:

1. Change the ‘Posts’ menu item to ‘Blog’

2. Move the ‘Pages’ and ‘Comments’ menus up above ‘Media’

The idea is that the difference between posts and pages is often confusing for new users and this should help make it more clear.

We are a bit torn on if this really is a good move, so thought it might be worth asking you here.

The non-developers amongst you might reasonably assume that there is no way in which you can contribute to WordPress. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Yesterday, I revealed one way in which a non-developer can help, by submitting bug reports via the WordPress Trac. Today, I have a whole swathe of additional options for you.

As the vast majority of you are no doubt aware, WordPress is an open source development platform. In practical terms, this means one thing – you can have a hand in maintaining the world’s most popular content management system.

Sounds pretty cool, right? However, there is a flip side to this – WordPress lives and dies by the efforts of volunteers. The vast majority of WordPress users will never contribute towards ongoing development. Whilst that is fine – you are certainly under no obligation to do so – if you feel you can help, there is a welcome place for you.

Multisite Bug Fix – Remove Subscribers from the Post Author Dropdown

There is a little bug with WordPress 3.0.1 that you may have encountered while using WordPress Multisite as the super admin. All Subscribers appear in the “Post Author” dropdown list on the post edit screen. This can be extremely inconvenient when you have several hundred users to scroll through in order to assign the correct author.

This bug has already been reported in trac and a patch to fix this issue is available. The problem should be resolved in WordPress 3.1, whenever that is released. For now the patch will work magic for you.

It’s been a long time in coming but it like like WordPress MU 2.7 is on the way.
