Note: a much-improved third edition of this resource is now available — you can find it here.
Announced just a few short days ago, the WPMU 100 is intended to showcase the top WordPress related blogs. And now it is time to unveil the inaugural list. But before you delve in, consider the following key points.
The WPMU 100 is not intended to represent the views or opinions of WPMU.org. The ranking algorithm is based upon publicly available data – the list is completely objective.
The rankings are bound to kick up plenty of debate, which we welcome. If the WPMU 100 proves to be popular, there will be updated lists in the future. Depending on the type of feedback we get, the ranking algorithm may be adjusted accordingly.
Finally, there is a chance that you will feel a worthy site hasn’t been included. This may simply be because the blog just didn’t rank (hundreds were considered), but there is always the possibility of a blog falling through the cracks. The best way to avoid this is to submit it for recommendation when the next list is produced.
That’s enough chit chat – here’s the list!

…Isn’t Something Missing?
What about the 100th blog? Well, the list wouldn’t be complete without WPMU.org, but in the interests of objectivity, we are not going to rank ourselves! You are already here, so we don’t need to be on the list ;-)
That’s It!
The top 100 WordPress related blogs on the internet, ranked objectively, and picked in part by you. What are your thoughts of the list? Any diamonds in the rough? Glaring omissions? Undeserved inclusions? Let the debate begin!

I presume this is a list of blogs that you would like to be considered for inclusion on the next list?
Yes – In terms of contribution to WordPress at least a couple of these should certainly be in the top 100
Okay – they will be considered next time around!
Ottopress is a must. Definitely.
+1 on Ottopress
Thanks for including us on your list. As a new site, we are looking forward to growing and improving our ranking on your list!
Thanks again,
Al Davis
wpteach.com
No problem Al :-)
Great resource for anyone with an interest in WP… :-)
Are you going to keep it updated? Even if it’s only once or twice a year, it’d be good to keep it fresh. :-)
Hi Iain,
It is likely that we will produce updated lists on a periodic basis. Watch this space!
Cheers,
Tom
Happy days!
I like the idea of releasing it periodically (like you get in computer mags with best hardware / software /accessories / gadgets / etc)…
Word of warning – these lists are fantastic resources, but you can never keep everyone happy with them… Lists like this are always subjective… And someone always feels aggrieved.
An alternative would be to allow people to vote – but then that just moves the subjectivity sideways (as it becomes a popularity contest rather than utilising WPMU’s perspective).
Maybe do something like Cnet reviews – allow both methods, have the “Editorial WPMU 100″ and the “User WPMU 100″? Most will overlap but would provide some differences (might also be a whole heap of extra, unneeded work for very little gain!).
Sorry, just brain splurging into the comments box…!
Hi Iain,
Appreciate your thoughts! To be honest, attracting enough votes to produce such a list would be nigh-on impossible. People like to comment on such lists a lot more than they like to contribute to them ;-)
Cheers,
Tom
I’d like to see this algorithm you are using. Most of the main sites people refer to have been left out while other sites that have nothing to do with WordPress but are just aggregators (alltop?!??) are listed. If this is a “top ranked sites on Google that reference WordPress”, it makes sense, but that is not a valuable nor informative stat. A more useful list would be “Top 100 trusted WordPress sites” or something like that. Search rankings are about quantity, not quality.
Just my two cents.
Josh
Hi Josh,
Thanks for your feedback.
I would be really appreciative if you could list all of the “main sites” we are missing, because we can then include them on the next list.
For what it’s worth, WPMU readers were given the opportunity twice to list any blogs for inclusion, so it would be surprising if most of the main sites were missed. I must also be having a brain fart for having missed them!
Google rank had nothing to do with the algorithm.
Other people seem to have found it useful :-) I’m sorry it wasn’t for you.
Cheers,
Tom
Thanks for a great list! Many I know, some are new! Time to update my bookmarks! :-)
Count this comment as a favorable response to keeping this new tradition alive!
And thanks for leaving the list at 99! Time to start singing:
99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall
99 Bottles of Beer
Click a link,
Read a Post,
98 Bottles of Beer on the Wall!
Be Well.
Paul.
Haha Paul, thanks!
Well this is a great list of sites. I’ve been meaning to scour the internet for places I can link to and pull WordPress information from and now I have a bunch of new sites I can work with. I guess I should have submitted my blog but you snooze you lose…
Thanks for the list.
Hey Chris,
You can submit your blog for the next list whenever you like!
Cheers,
Tom
It’s mainly WordPress questions & answers but I’d like to submit my blog for consideration :) maybe not in the top 100- but I enjoy helping the community where I can!
http://sean.co/questions/wordpress-answers/
It’ll be considered next time around :-)
They are no french website…
Hi GeekPress,
There are two reasons for that:
1. Our audience is primarily English-speaking
2. My French stops short at about “merci beaucoup”, so I would not be able to tell whether or not a site in French is a good resource
It would be nice if there was a way to incorporate foreign-language blogs in the list, or perhaps have a top 10 of foreign language blogs. It is something I am considering for next time.
Cheers,
Tom
Wpmu.org is one of the best resources for getting quality information about WordPress and i easily access any information i want here.
Well you don’t need the list then Jane ;-)
WPSites.net
Didn’t know you where making this list Tom but i think my site deserves to be on it next time
Hi Brad,
It’ll be entered for consideration next time!
Cheers,
Tom
What are the factors you used in ranking the sites?
The ranking algorithm will likely change as we develop the list and gauge the reaction. But it will probably always remain top secret ;-)
We are honored and humbled to be included in this list of such great minds in WordPress and the other enthusiasts who contribute to the community as a whole.
We work very hard to provide useful information for others and to make sure we are writing, optimizing, and promoting the very best we can.
That said, it might be fruitful in the future to provide a list that is based on helpful contributions to the WordPress community as a whole, whether it be through core contribs, themes, plugins, news, tutorials, or any other aspect of the software we all know and love:)
p.s. We’re #54 if you were wondering;)
Hi Adam,
Producing any kind of list that is based upon subjective analysis increases the workload by an enormous amount. On a list of this size, keeping it objective is the only practical way to do it.
One thing I am considering is “highlighting” some of what we consider to be the best blogs on the list, so that they get extra exposure.
Cheers,
Tom
“The ranking algorithm is based upon publicly available data – the list is completely objective.”
Tom, you never answered the method on how you determine the ranking. I really hope the algorithm based on publicly available data can be made available to the publicly. So can you please share that with us =).
Hello,
At this point we are keeping the algorithm secret. It is likely to change as we develop the list and become more comfortable with what we are doing. Releasing the algorithm will likely lead to extensive arguments about how the list should be put together. Best just to focus on the list itself, rather than the science behind it.
Cheers,
Tom
Great list here, but, ‘Filmclique’ should be a must – folks!
Do you mean filmclique.com? That seems to have very little (or nothing) to do with WordPress.
I think these too should be in:
http://theme.fm/
http://wp.tutsplus.com/
Hi David,
From memory, theme.fm was not considered because it hasn’t been updated since last year.
WP Tuts+ was 13th on the list.
Cheers,
Tom
Holy cow, this is an amazing compilation guys, really cool job here.
Thanks!
Sergio
No problem Sergio!
Nice list of blogs really inspiring blogs on their niches.Keep updating them thanks
Will do Rebel :-)
I found very interesting wplift and Famous Bloggers. Totally agree including WP Beginner in the first 5
Glad it was of help Bob!
Very glad to see WPBeginner making the list. My favorite WP blog that I read regularly is OttoPress. All the good dev stuff :)
Thanks Syed – OttoPress will be on the next list :-)
Hi Tom,
Thank you very much for including our website LatestWP.
Do you have any idea when the next list will be?
Will you be updating this same post or adding new post altogether? Maybe a dedicated page would do it? :)
Thanks
No problem Ayman.
The next list will be in the coming months – we’re not sure yet. It would be a brand new post/ page.
Cheers,
Tom
Hey, thanks for including me on the list. A lot of blogs here I know and love, and some new one’s to explore! I know what a challenge it can be doing this kind of thing, and appreciate your hard work!
Thanks Bob, I really appreciate that! :-)
Thanks for including WPTavern on the list. It’s not the top 10 but it’s in the top 14 :) The next time someone complains about the content on the site, I’ll point them to this list and say change the channel lol.
Haha – no problem Jeffro! I’m a regular reader of your site :-)
Hi again, I was super excited to learn that we were on this list, twice! I had to leave one more comment to let you all know that we’ve put together ‘The Ultimate WordPress Giveaway’ and it’s now live on our site.
I thought the commentators and readers here would be pretty interested:)
That’s a shameless plug Adam ;-) everyone likes a giveaway though :-)
It is indeed Tom, but one I know other WordPress freaks like me can benefit from:)
Great Listing. Saw the list and wasn’t surprised. Passing it on to others to have a gander at.
Thanks David!
Looks like the link to WP Dude is a bad link. May want to correct that.
Thanks for the tip – fixed it!
Why http://www.studiopress.com/ (GENESIS FRAMEWORK) is not included in this list?
Hello,
The StudioPress Blog is mainly promotional – there isn’t much in the way of WordPress tips and tutorials.
Cheers,
Tom
Thank you very much for selecting WP Rockers one of the top WordPress blogs on the internet.
No problem :-)
Fantastic list Tom! It’s my goal to be included on this list someday.
I like the look of your site Ryan – it’ll be considered next time around! :-)
Many thanks for featuring WPDezign.com :)
Do you guys offer ‘The WPMU 100′ badge which we can display on our website?
Best,
Ned
We do now! Check it out: http://wpmu.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/100wpmu.png
WPDesigner has not been updated since 2008, unless you count the list of affiliate linked hosting sites. Anything beyond that list of hosting services is sorely outdated. I would highly suggest you remove this site from your list.
Beyond that, I do thank you for the list. I picked up a few new feeds!
Ed
Duly noted Ed – thanks for the tip! WP Designer will not be included in future lists (unless of course they start producing good content again).
You might consider http://themesquirrel.com for the next go around – a pretty cool way to review lost of great themes, and I hope they continue their them author interviews – interesting stuff. I think I actually heard about on WPMU, but perhaps that article was after this compilation – cheers.
I would suggest including eMarket Design http://emarketdesign.com. A premier Saas platform specialized in WordPress based business applications – notably Wp App Studio: a plugin that creates other plugins without requiring any coding/
