It’s late here in the UK but I couldn’t drag my carcass to bed without letting you all know that WordPress 3.3 has dropped which means it’s time for you to put your upgrade hats on, get out your FTP program, flex your clicking finger, and turn your WordPress into 3.3.
WordPress 3.3 has been named after saxophonist Sonny Stitt. Check out the video from wp.org:
(Sonny Stitt is a pretty good choice but I’m still holding out for a WordPress version named after cosmic-jazz-lord Sun Ra. Since it’s unlikely, here’s his version of Pink Elephants on Parade which is one of my favorite things on YouTube:

ANYWAY, you’re probably couldn’t care less about which jazz musician WordPress is named after (did you know, though, that BuddyPress is named after pizza shops? I learned that off Paul Gibbs last week I did. That’s a good piece of trivia for you). You’re interested in the new features.
Okay, I guess I can tell you what they are:
- New tooltips for newbies (with lots of potential for plugin and theme devs to take advantage of)
- Drag and drop uploader
- Hover fly-out menus for navigation
- Improved toolbar (previously the admin bar)
- Tumblr importer (yes plz!)
- Improved co-editing support
- Revamped help tabs
- Improved dashboard experience for iPad users
- New editor API
- New jQuery version
- Improved performace on post-name only permalinks (yay!)

I don’t know why you’re still here. I thought I would have lost you at upgrade, and definitely by the time I got to subjecting you to Sun Ra. Go upgrade! I’m going to bed now….
As far as I’ve seen, this new version isn’t really compatible with Firefox 3.6.24. Too bad.
That’s quite a way back in versions though, as I’m currently using Firefox 8.0.1
Yeah but the new Firefox versions don’t support Google Toolbar anymore. That’s the reason why I have to use an older version :(

I think there was a lot of talk about which browsers WP would be workign with on the release of 3.2, can’t remember what it said about Firefox though.
Interesting features and upgrades, but what about its performance regarding the non-standard permalinks and “forbidden” ones (like /%category%/%postname%/ structure)?
Like the links category feature it provided. Really very useful for me.And also the security can be better, I assume.
So far the upgrade was fast. The Thesis 1.8 child theme had issues on one of the sites, otherwise things appear fine. Were any changes made for the visitors to sites?
I wasn’t aware it has been released. I just found out on facebook. I hope that this one comes with better performance for the permalink structures that 3.2 and lower versions struggle with. Our blog at HowEbook.com desires this so much cos we are using the category/title permalink structure.
I have been procrastinating with moving my sites over to WordPress from Tumblr for a while because it was going to be a manual process of hundreds of posts. I started a Tumblr import into a WordPress dev site of mine and the process has been pretty slow. As we all know, Tumblr has it’s fair share of downtime which is causing the import to take a while. It’s been about 24 hours since I started the import and the import is about 2/3 complete. The other thing worth mentioning is that some imported posts are referencing Tumblr’s CDN for the images instead of downloading them to the media library within WordPress. It isn’t doing this for every image so I am not sure what is going on. However, when the import is complete it will still have saved me a ton of headache even though the process isn’t 100% seamless yet. :) I hope this helps others out there.

Another great addition to 3.3, that I didn’t know about until I had to do it, was the way it now deals with lost passwords.
Now you click a link from an email as before, but it gives you a different screen where you just add the new password you want to use.
Time to upgrade, WPMU! After logging to http://wpmu.org/wp/wp-admin, I was greeted with this message:
Have you had any problems with the WordPress 3.3 upgrade? I’ve noticed a few bugs with the media library.
Is there any improvements with the /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure in WP 3.3 or just %postname%? Is there still any performance benefit from starting your permalink with a number?
