The First WPMU Plugin Competition
Posted on 24th July 2008 by James and tagged best, plugin, Plugins, prizes, vote, wpmuUpdate: The competition now has an official page where we’re cobbling everything together.
So, inspired by WLTC, and the many great entries that have been made (and may not have been inspired if it hadn’t been for the competition), let’s have the first ever WPMU plugin competition and hold it right here :)
Here’s the plan (it’s a bit flexible still, so feel free to make suggestions):
- Let’s say the plugin competition is 60 days long and starts… now! Which means that the deadline for plugins to be submitted will be 24th September 2008
- To submit a plugin, you register here, write up a post (we’ll give it a quick once over before its published) and make the plugin available to download on your own site, WPMU DEV or wherever you fancy putting it.
- The plugins must be freely available for any sort of use, choose the license that works best for you.
- Plugins must be either brand new or significant improvements / twists on existing plugins.
- Once the time is up and all the plugins have been submitted there will be two votes… the first will be open to the public, the second will be up to the judges (the judges being anyone who submits decently to the prize pool and fancies it :)
- Depending on number of entries there may be categories involved
- At the end there will be ‘peoples choice’ winners and ‘judges’ winners
If you would you like to sponsor / be a judge the get in touch with us.
To start with Incsub would like to contribute $250 and 2 x WPMU DEV Premium yearly memberships (valued at $250 each).
Let us know what you think below… and happy plugin writing!

Howabout a Developer, multi-site license available for DeepBlue - WPMU users will like the bundled bbpress theme.
Question: does the plugin need to be for WPMU-only? Or will a plugin that’s designed to work with both WPMU and regular WordPress work? The rules don’t specify, so I’m not sure.
I’m considering submitting the new version of my video embedding plugin if it’s allowed (it’s ~2000 line recode from scratch, so it passes the “significant improvements” test).
@Viper007Bond - sure thing :) As long as it works in mu-plugins (and doesn’t need to be activated per user) the floor’s wide open!

I’m a bit late for that one.
Well, I’ll be coming back to see if you’ll be announcing any other cometitions!
I would definitely be interested in an annual competition. If nothing else I might get to use a couple new plugins. :)
yes a yearly deal would be great and maybe some better prize’s more money would definitly heat up the competition and bring in some really great new plugins
Oh I love plugin contests I am looking forward for this. I will have a lot of time to work on it.

I would have liked to get in on this competition. I only found out about it after the fact though. Of course, the bright side is that if you make it an annual event, I now have a whole lot of time to code a plugin for entry. So, please do make a habit of it.

How is it that I always miss out on these cool competitions? Hopefully someone hosts another similar competition soon. I’d like to take a try at coding my own plugin for once.
As much as I love contests, I can’t do this one because I really don’t know how to build plug-ins, but thanks for the great post.
