4 More Smilies & Emoticons Plugins For Your WordPress Blog
Smiles and emoticons are one of the great dividers amongst bloggers – you either love them, or you hate them. If you hate them, turning them off is a simple case of unchecking the “Convert emoticons” box in Settings > Writing. Unfortunately, you cannot prevent people from offering up a simple text emoticon :-) but at least the graphics are gone.
For those amongst us who actually like emoticons, you may wish to extend the capabilities of your WordPress blog. Earlier this month, Joe told you how to Get Cool with both Custom and Default WordPress Smilies and Emoticons. In that post he featured 4 custom emoticons plugins. Today, I have another 4 for you. These are all up to date and have been tested in WordPress 3.3.1. Enjoy!
1. Tango Smileys Extended
If you simply want more choice, Tango Smileys Extended is a great option – it extends the number of available smilies from the default 18 to 202.
That’s more than enough smiles for most people.
2. Moods Addon for Ultimate TinyMCE
If you want to add a bit more flair to your emoticons, Moods Addon for Ultimate TinyMCE could be your answer. It offers up a selection of over 50 animated smilies, such as these:
Despite what the name of the plugin suggests, you do not need Ultimate TinyMCE installed in order to use it (although that plugin is a great option). If you are size-conscious then this plugin is probably not for you – these emoticons were not designed with a reasonable file size in mind (I found one that was nearly 100kb).

3. Zaazu Emoticons
If the above emoticons weren’t outlandish enough for you, Zaazu Emoticons is ready and waiting to kick it up a notch:
This plugin is for the hardcore emoticon lover only. Looking at these actually makes my blood boil a little bit, but with over 2,500 downloads, there are people out there who obviously like them! As with Moods Addon for Ultimate TinyMCE, each emoticon weighs in with a relatively hefty file size.
4. wp-Monalisa
We’ll finish off with a more sensible and flexible plugin. wp-Monalisa offers you a range of emoticons, and also allows you to select which should be offered up as an option:
